Key Stage 1

Key Stage 1 Standard Assessment Tests (SATs)

In Year 2, pupils take tests in:

• English reading;
• English grammar, punctuation and spelling;
• Mathematics.

Phonics

All children take a phonics screening test in Year 1, when your child will read 40 words out loud to a teacher. You will find out how your child did, and their teacher will assess whether he or she needs extra help with reading. If your child does not do well enough in the check, they will have to do it again in Year 2.

We use a blend of phonics resources to support our children, including ‘Read Write Inc.’ ‘Jolly Phonics’ and ‘Letters and Sounds’. The School has achieved outstanding success supporting its children in passing their phonics screening test, being in the top 4% of schools nationally.

National Curriculum Objectives

The National Curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject. This is a statutory document that all schools must follow. Schools have the autonomy to decide on how this content is delivered and what approach we would take to ensure that our curriculum is bespoke to the needs of our children and community.
